Bible Verses for Work Stress

Work was God's idea before sin was. But after Eden, work became harder than it was meant to be — and most of us feel that some Mondays. These twelve passages are for the meeting you are dreading, the boss who is unfair, the workload that does not let up, and the day you wanted to quit.

Colossians 3:23-24

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

The deepest audience for your work is not the person who signs your paycheck. That changes who you are working for, even when no one else notices.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus does not promise the absence of work — He promises a different yoke. Some of the exhaustion you are carrying is from a yoke He never asked you to wear.

Psalm 127:1-2

Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

There is work that God blesses, and there is work you are doing alone — pushing harder, sleeping less, getting nowhere. The verse is not against work. It is against the version of work that does not include Him.

Ecclesiastes 3:13

Also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God.

Enjoyment of your work is a gift, not an entitlement. When you find some, thank Him for it.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed.

Commit the project. Commit the meeting. Commit the email. He is not too small for any of it.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Not in vain. Even the parts no one sees. Even the parts that did not get the recognition they deserved.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

Paul wrote this from prison, about contentment in any circumstance. It is not a power-verse for crushing your performance review. It is a strength-verse for the moments you want to give up.

Exodus 20:8-10

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it.

God built a day off into the rhythm of creation. If you are working seven days a week, you are out of sync with how He designed you.

Proverbs 22:29

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He will not serve obscure men.

Skill matters. Keep getting better at the thing you do. God uses craft.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, but in due season we shall reap, if we do not give up.

The harvest is in due season. Not this week, necessarily. Keep planting.

1 Peter 5:7

casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

Including the work worries. Including the one you cannot stop thinking about at 11 PM.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Moses prayed this. Pray it over your work today.

A prayer

Father, You see the work in front of me. You see what is hard about it. Help me to work heartily, but not at the cost of my soul. Give me skill. Give me rest. Establish the work of my hands. Amen.
