Justifying Grace — The Doorway
If prevenient grace is the porch, justifying grace is the doorway. It is the moment a person crosses from death to life, from unbelief to belief, from being a stranger to being a child. Methodists hold to justification by faith alone — fully Protestant on this point — but understand it as one stage in a larger journey of grace, not the end. These twelve passages anchor the doctrine.

Romans 3:23-24
for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;
Justified freely. By His grace. Through the redemption Christ accomplished. Every phrase matters.

Romans 5:1
Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
The result of justification is peace with God — a relationship restored.

Romans 4:5
But to him who doesn't work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
The ungodly are justified. Not the righteous. Not the trying. The ungodly — by faith.

Galatians 2:16
yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ... because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
Paul rules out works-righteousness three times in one verse. Pauline emphasis.

Ephesians 2:8-9
for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Titus 3:5-7
not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit... that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Justified by His grace, made heirs. Justification has a forward gaze — to inheritance.

Romans 10:9-10
that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
How justification is received — heart belief, verbal confession. Both work together.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The great exchange — His righteousness imputed to us, our sin imputed to Him.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Now — present tense — no condemnation. Justification settles the legal verdict.

Acts 13:38-39
Be it known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man is proclaimed to you remission of sins, and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Justified from ALL things. The full sweep of forgiveness.

Romans 5:8-9
But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God's wrath through him.
Justified by His blood. The historical cost is the basis of the legal verdict.

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Assurance: you may know that you have eternal life. Wesley preached assurance as the normal Christian experience.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, I bring nothing of my own. I cannot earn what You alone can give. By Your grace, justify me through faith in Your finished work. Give me the witness of Your Spirit that I am Your child. Amen.
