Humanity & Salvation

Original or Birth Sin

Original sin is not in the following of Adam (as the Pelagians vainly talk) but is the corruption of the nature of every person, naturally descended from Adam, whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness and of his own nature inclined to evil, and that continually.

Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.

— Romans 5:12 (WEB)

Note

Wesley held a robust doctrine of original sin — but paired it with the universal scope of prevenient grace (see distinctives).
