The New Birth
Jesus told a religious leader who had spent his whole life studying Scripture that he had to be "born again." It was not a metaphor for trying harder — it was the announcement of a new kind of life God Himself gives. These twelve passages explain what regeneration is, who needs it, how it happens, and what it produces.

John 3:3
Jesus answered him, "Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God."
Jesus said it to the most religious man in Jerusalem. Religion alone does not save.

John 3:5-7
Jesus answered, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't marvel that I said to you, You must be born anew."
A new birth, not a self-improvement. The Spirit produces a new kind of life.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.
A NEW creation — not a renovated old one. The change is fundamental.

Ezekiel 36:26-27
I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my ordinances, and do them.
The Old Testament promised it. God Himself replaces the heart of stone with a heart of flesh.

Titus 3:5
not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Two divine actions — washing (regeneration) and renewing. Both are gifts.

1 Peter 1:23
having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.
The seed is God's Word. The new birth comes through hearing and receiving Scripture.

Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
Of HIS will — not ours. The new birth is divine initiative.

1 John 5:1
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Whoever loves the father also loves the child who is born of him.
The test of the new birth is simple: do you confess Jesus as the Christ?

1 John 3:9
Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God.
The new birth produces a real, observable change. It cannot be hidden.

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
The fruit of the Spirit is what new birth grows. Not perfect, but visible.

Romans 8:14-16
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God. For you didn't receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;
Born again means adopted into God's family — with all the rights of a son or daughter.

Romans 6:4
We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
Baptism dramatizes the new birth — buried with Christ, raised with Him into a new kind of life.
A prayer
Father, I cannot give myself a new birth any more than I gave myself my first one. Do for me what I cannot do. Take my heart of stone and give me a heart that loves You. Make me Your child. Amen.
