The Magisterium — Teaching Authority
The Magisterium is the teaching office of the Catholic Church — the Pope and the bishops in communion with him — entrusted with the authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in Scripture or Tradition. The Magisterium does not stand above the Word but serves it (CCC §86). Its judgments are binding on the faithful in matters of faith and morals. These ten passages anchor the doctrine.
What Scripture says

-
Matthew 18:17
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly. If he refuses to hear the assembly also, let him be to you as a Gentile or a tax collector.
Final authority in disputes is the Church — not private judgment.
-
Matthew 28:18-20
All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Christ's authority is given to the apostles for teaching, with His promise to remain with them.
-
Luke 10:16
Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. Whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.
Apostolic authority is identified with Christ's authority. To reject the apostles' teaching is to reject Christ.
-
John 16:13
However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.
The Spirit guides the Church into ALL truth. Catholic teaching sees this fulfilled in the Magisterium.
-
Acts 15:28
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things:
The Council of Jerusalem speaks with the joint authority of the Spirit and the apostolic college.
-
Ephesians 2:20
being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
The Church is built on the apostles — and their successors carry that foundational role forward.
-
Ephesians 4:11-14
He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man... that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine.
Christ gave teachers to protect the Church from doctrinal chaos. The Magisterium fulfills this office.
-
1 Timothy 3:15
the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
The Church is the pillar and ground of truth — a teaching institution by Christ's design.
-
2 Peter 1:20
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation.
Scripture is not for private interpretation. It is read in the Church, under the guidance of those entrusted with its interpretation.
-
Matthew 23:2-3
The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses' seat. All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don't do their works; for they say, and don't do.
Jesus honored the principle of teaching office even when individual teachers failed. The chair's authority is not nullified by the occupant's sins.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, You promised to be with Your Church always and to guide her into all truth through Your Spirit. Bless our Holy Father and our bishops. Give them wisdom, courage, and fidelity to Your Word. Help us to receive their teaching with humble docility. Amen.
