Religious Liberty

God alone is Lord of the conscience. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. Civil government should not impose taxes for the support of any form of religion. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal.

Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don't be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

— Galatians 5:1 (WEB)

Note

Religious liberty is a distinctively Baptist contribution to Western political thought. Baptists in colonial Virginia and Massachusetts fought for it long before it was constitutional.
